2/5/20- Today we started Dingoes at Dinnertime and then made a Koala origami bookmark. This was lots of fun. We got to discuss new vocab words and be challenged by our origami.
1/15, 1/22, 1/29- The last 3 weeks we spent reading Day of the Dragon King. We learned some really interesting vocab words. We worked on recalling the details of the book and even made a fun dragon craft.
12/4/19 & 12/11/19- We have read our entire book Tigers at Twilight. We have learned about lots of animals and even got to try a food from India! Thanks Ashwin!!! This book was a great adventure and we learned some really interesting things.
11/20/19- We finished our canvas paintings/drawings of our Prairie Blue and started to read our new book. The boys had fun putting the finishing touches on their projects and it really helped cement in all the facts they learned along the way.
11/13/19- Today we wrapped up our book and started working on our project. The kids are making making painting of the great plains on a canvas.
11/6/19- We continued reading our book, still learning lots of new words along the way. We have been discussing how their way of life was so different than ours now. How it would have been to have to go out and hunt for all our food, how it would have been to have to make everything by hand. We take our Targets and Malls and Grocery Stores for granted... a little lesson on appreciation :)
10/30/19- We finally finished our Titanic projects an the boys took them home. They are very proud of their creations and so am I! We have been reading our new book and learning lots of new words along the way:
Coonskin cap
Buckskin clothes
We also learned that while they hunted buffalo the Lakota Indians were great at using all they could from them:
Skin- Tepee
Bones- tools
horns- cups
hair- ropes
ribs- sleds
We are all really enjoying this book and all the interesting facts and way of life in the Great Plains.
10/23/19- I thought we were going to wrap up our project but the boys were having too much fun working on details and asked for one more week to finish. So while they worked I started reading book #18. We read 2 chapters, discussed some new words, even recalled information from the previous book that was discussed at the beginning of this book.
10/16/19- We continued to work on our Titanic project from our book. The boys have some really awesome ideas for their ship and it is fun watching it all come together. We should be done with them next and will also begin our next book #18.
10/9/19- We started working our project today. We talked a lot about how we aren't going to rush this project. We took the time to paint the outside of our "box" Titanic with 3 coats of each color so we can't see the Vans words below. :) We will continue working on these for at least another week...if not 2 if I can have them really take their time.
10/2/19- Today we finished the books. Discussed new words, and completed our worksheets. Then we discussed our final project we wanted to do. I am bringing in shoe boxes for the boys to create their own version on the Titanic. We learned so many interesting facts about the Titanic. The boys can bring in whatever they want to add to their creation. I also told them they can use whatever I have in my classroom....paint, paper, tape, popsicle sticks, cotton balls, etc, etc. It will be fun to make this project next week.
9/25/19- We were planning to read chapters 3&4 today and after we read chapter 4 and it was a major cliff hanger we HAD to read chapter 5 too! The boys are really into the book and I love their excitement. We continued to talk about words we didn't quite know what they meant. We also worked on our reading skills as we read playing "popcorn". Everyone gets lots of turns to read!
We did our worksheet recalling what happened in the chapters. They work on them individually then we discuss as a class. Such a great way to comprehend everything going on in the book.
After we read, we played a vocab game together. It was a great day for learning!
9/18/19- Today we read chapters 1&2. We had some great discussion throughout the book. We talked about some new vocab words we didn't know and their meanings. We also talked about the correct way to read certain words when they are in italic. The boys did great with their reading!! We read the chapters by doing popcorn so we all got lots of turns to read.
After that we did a quick worksheet to show what we remembered from the book. Then they wanted to draw their own Titanic picture on the back of their worksheets.
** I also reminded them to read a different magic tree house at home so they can bring in a project to tell us all about it!**
9/11/19- What a great year we have planned in Magic Tree House! As a class we finalized our reading list (for now). The boys are so excited we may get through even more books! For now, we planned #17,18,19, 20. I have each of them and we will read solely in class. However, you are welcome to get them from the library if they want their own copy to follow along with.
We also discussed that they can/should read different ones at home and when they have completed a book they can make some sort of project to bring in and share it with us. This will be a time that they can re-cap the book for us too. Ideas for projects were (but not limited to): diorama, paintings, drawings, posters, etc etc. :)
After some housekeeping items, we read the story about Elmer the Elephant. The kids thought it was pretty funny since my last name is Elmer. Then we discussed how being different is such a good thing. We agreed that if we were all the same life would be pretty boring. We wrote down a few things that made us different and colored our Elmer the Elephant all different colors.
